"It has been a true gift to have teacher Marianne in our lives! We first met her as the head teacher for our daughter’s preschool -- she is not only a talented teacher -- her love, kindness, patience, and generosity towards all children is simply phenomenal. Her overall approach is to follow a child’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and gently guide it to maximum effect. She has continued this teaching philosophy into her music teaching, and we LOVE it! Previously we had experience with the push-push-push philosophy of Suzuki practice and while initially enthusiastic, our older daughter gave up playing after a while. But with Marianne’s teaching, both girls are excited to learn, music is fun again! and despite no requirements to practice, they will often choose to practice on their own. Another word of praise: Marianne is great at meeting your children where they are. My kids are markedly different in age and temperament, and Marianne finds very different and creative ways to engage them. She doesn’t follow cookie-cutter pedagogy -- she is flexible and creative and will see your child for who she is, customizing her approach specifically for her." -- Lily, mom of two piano students in Berkeley, November 2016
"It has been an amazing experience having guitar lessons with you. You have not only taught me guitar but you have made me laugh, smile, and have fun...I will always remember who taught me first...the wonderful you! So...THANK YOU!" -- Ruby, age 11
"Marianne was one of my son's favorite [preschool] teachers. She impressed me by her incredible patience, appreciation of each child's unique learning process, and the sense of fun and joy that she infused into the learning environment. It was very sad when she left to pursue music full time-- until I realized she could be our family's music teacher! Marianne has been working with my son- now 8 years old- to learn piano and ukulele for the past two years. She has approached his learning with the same sense of respect and desire to connect with his interests that she showed as his preschool teacher. Marianne has helped him set goals and inspired him to (constantly!) practice of his own accord. She allows him to choose songs that he likes- often ones that I would have guessed are far above his beginner's ability. She has looked for activities that are engaging and set up routines and structures to his lessons that allow him to stay focused and make progress. She has enabled his music study to be a source of joy, creativity, and delight on a daily basis." -- Sarah, mom of a piano student in Oakland, May 2018
